Please Ask Your Representative to Cosponsor H.R. 2224, the Pet Safety and Protection Act
Dear Humanitarian,
The Pet Safety and Protection Act (H.R. 2224), introduced by Rep. Mike Doyle (D-PA) and Chris Smith (R-NJ),
prohibits random-source Class B dealers from selling dogs and cats for
use in experiments. Under this abuse-ridden system, a small number of
unscrupulous dealers supply labs with non-purpose-bred dogs and cats.
So-called random source Class B dealers and their middleman cohorts,
called “bunchers,” acquire the dogs and cats they sell from a variety of
sources. They keep the animals in horrendous conditions, routinely
violate the Animal Welfare Act, obtain animals through fraud, deception,
and outright theft, and falsify their records. The U.S. Department of
Agriculture, which licenses and regulates these dealers, has
acknowledged that it is unable to guarantee that dogs and cats collected
and sold by these dealers are not being illegally acquired.
What You Can Do:
Please
ask your representative to cosponsor H. R. 2224 to protect companion
animals and establish integrity in the provision of dogs and cats for
research purposes. Please send an email through the Compassion Index by entering your zip code below and clicking “GO.” You will find suggested talking points to include in your email.
